After graduating in Commerce I worked in industry, marketing and distribution. After some years I returned to college to follow my passion: sociology, psychoanalysis and linguistics. This, and some of life’s twists, drew me towards the world of counselling and psychotherapy. I did a Diploma in Addiction Counseling with the Hazelden Foundation, USA, and then worked at Aiseiri Treatment Centres in Cahir and Wexford.
In the late 90’s, having established a successful private practice in the Dun Laoghaire area I completed a clinical M.Sc. in Systemic Family Therapy at UCD and the Mater Hospital, Dublin so as to develop my expertise in working with couples and families.
My masters’ thesis focused on the pattern of how difficult relationships between parents and their children is often repeated in the next generation (Transgenerational Continuity: Changing the Pattern of Replicated Scripts). This is an issue that regularly comes up in therapy.
